Ask a longtime Chanhassen resident where the town gathers on a summer Saturday and the answer used to be some version of downtown: the Legion patio, the farmers market lot, the block around West 78th and Market. Ask the same question this August and the honest answer is a private road most people have driven past without registering it exists.
Motorplex Court sits off Audubon Road on the south edge of town, a short cul-de-sac that dead-ends at a 20-acre campus of garage condominiums called the Chanhassen AutoPlex. On the last Saturday of every month from April through September, and on three special Thursday evenings each summer, that campus becomes the largest free public event in Chanhassen. The last two of those dates fall inside the next four weeks.
The AutoPlex is not the building most residents assume it is
Drive past on a normal weekday and it reads as light-industrial storage. It is not. Chanhassen AutoPlex is a private garage condominium community located at 1740 Motorplex Court in Chanhassen, Minnesota, where 120 owners use their garage condos to store, showcase and restore their collector, classic and exotic car and motorcycle collections. The event that opens those doors to the public is called Cars and Caves, and it has been building an audience quietly for years while the downtown calendar has been fragmented by the Market Boulevard redevelopment work.
The scale is the part that surprises people the first time. Expect over 400 vehicles displayed both indoors and outdoors across the sprawling 20-acre campus. That is more cars in one place than any downtown block party or festival Chanhassen produces on its own calendar, and the admission price is zero.
Two dates to hold before Labor Day
The 2026 season has one Thursday evening show and one Saturday show remaining before the campus goes quiet for winter, plus a September finale worth writing down now.

The Thursday format is worth understanding on its own terms. There will be three Thursday Summer Nights shows from 5 – 8 p.m. on June 4, July 30, and August 20. August 20 is the last one on the 2026 calendar, which makes it the season's final chance to see the campus lit at dusk with the cave doors open. If you have only been to a daytime show, the evening version reads as a different event entirely.
The August 29 Saturday leans British. August 29 features British makes including MG, Mini, Aston, Jag and McLaren. The AutoPlex has confirmed the same lineup, noting that this month the center of the campus will feature British cars from Aston Martin, Jaguar, McLaren, MG, Mini, Rolls Royce and etc.
What is actually on the ground during a show
The event is bigger than the vehicles, and the food setup is the part that keeps families staying past an hour. Cars and Caves is family-friendly and free to attend, and each month the local Chanhassen favorites Dandy Lion Coffee and Dog Park Gourmet will be on site to provide drinks and food. Both are Chanhassen operators, which is a small detail with a real consequence: the concession revenue at the largest recurring free event in town cycles back to businesses whose owners live here.
A few things worth knowing before you go:
- Parking is free on-site and off-site, and the campus is walkable end to end in under fifteen minutes.
- Visitors have the unique opportunity to peek inside many of the 120 meticulously customized garage condos, affectionately known as 'Caves.'
- 100% of any funds raised at Cars and Caves belong to the charity. The August partner is still listed as TBD, but the format is a donation bucket, not an admission fee.
- The show runs 9:00 am – 12:00 pm (Noon) April – September, which is a change from prior years and worth checking your memory against.
The pattern to notice, if you are a resident who has been in Chanhassen more than five years, is that the AutoPlex has quietly absorbed a role the downtown block used to play. The reason has less to do with the AutoPlex itself and more to do with what has been happening on Market Boulevard.
The downtown context most people are still catching up to
The Chanhassen Cinema and the Country Inn & Suites site is being replaced with two mixed-use buildings called Harlow and Bennett. The 4 acres previously consisted of the Country Inn & Suites and the closed Chanhassen Cinema, and the approved plans include two buildings with five new commercial tenant spaces totaling nearly 15,000 square feet of first-floor commercial space to be used for restaurants, retail, or additional commercial services, with upper stories consisting of approximately 310 market-rate apartments. The construction timeline is not close: the anticipated opening of Bennett (west building) is September 2027, and the anticipated opening of Harlow (east building) is December 2026.
In the interim, the everyday summer venue for a Chanhassen resident who wants a large, walkable, free thing to do has drifted south to Motorplex Court. That is not a permanent condition. Once Harlow opens next winter and Bennett follows in 2027, the center of gravity will move back. For the next twelve months, the AutoPlex is doing more civic work than its industrial-park address suggests.

The Tuesday most people forget to plan for
The other August anchor is not at the AutoPlex. Each year on the first Tuesday night in August, the City of Chanhassen joins thousands of communities nationwide in observing Night to Unite, a statewide event that builds and fosters community bonds between citizens, businesses and public safety entities in local jurisdictions. This year that lands on August 4, and it is a neighborhood-block-party format rather than a central-venue event. If your street has not registered, most of them register through the city site, and there is still time.
There is a small subplot here worth flagging for anyone who has been in Chanhassen through 2025: in 2025, the Chanhassen Fire Department challenged the Chaska, Victoria and Carver Fire Departments to a friendly competition to see who could collect the most donations during the event. Whether that runs back in 2026 is a fair thing to ask your block captain.
Where to land after noon
The Cars and Caves show ends at noon, which is close enough to lunch that most people leave hungry. Two of the newer options within a five-minute drive have both opened recently enough that they still count as new to a lot of residents.
Moe's Char House is the steakhouse-and-lodge concept that took over the space on the east side of downtown. Their weekly rhythm is worth knowing: every Wednesday from 4–9 PM is half price on Moe's Jumbo Wings, dine-in only, and every Wednesday from 5–7 PM the restaurant runs a weekly Meat Raffle, which is a very Minnesota detail to inherit and lean into.
Mo' Bettahs Hawaiian is the newest arrival in the fast-casual tier and pulls a different crowd, particularly families with kids coming off a morning at the show. Both spots show up on the current Chanhassen new-restaurant lists, alongside a handful of others like Serious Sanji, Fathead Bill's, Nature Nook Cafe, and Izakaya Kazama that have opened in the last eighteen months.
One to watch: Hope Breakfast Bar has confirmed a Chanhassen location, with details listed on the company site as "coming soon". No firm opening date yet. If you have been driving to their Eagan or St. Louis Park locations, it will not be much longer.
The Arboretum bookend
If you want a bookend to the AutoPlex weekend that stays outdoors, the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska is running Harvest Days programming through late summer, and their fall discovery-booth format keeps operating through September. It is a fifteen-minute drive from Motorplex Court, and the pairing works because the AutoPlex show ends at noon and the Arboretum reads better in afternoon light anyway.
The runway from here to Labor Day
Three weekends, one Tuesday, and one Thursday night. Held in the right order, they are:

- Thursday, August 20: Last Thursday Summer Nights at the AutoPlex, 5–8 p.m.
